Why is it, as babys we can survive in the womb under water, and we can't after we are born?

I'm still boggled by this one. As babys we are in the womb under water. Living, breathing, hearts beating, etc.... However once we are born, we can no longer sustain life under water. I just don't get this.... Who knows?......
